I've realized I have a thing about signs, particularly old ones with designs that clearly evoke an earlier time.  Tonight, I attended the re-lighting of the sign for the Highland Theatre on Figueroa St. in the Highland Park neighborhood of Los Angeles.  The sign dates back to 1924. About 200 people were there, as well as a marching band, cheerleaders and a city councilman. Some public money and a lot of private money went into restoring the sign, and the re-lighting was a really nice little neighborhood civic event.  I really enjoyed it.

99cents-355.jpg

"99 cents only" stores are very common in Los Angeles.  I should amend that to say that they are common in the less-well-off sections of Los Angeles.  You won't find one in Beverly Hills.  But you can get really good deals on lots of things if you know what to look for.  This is a perfect LA landscape to me: Palm trees leaning into the sun and the lunchtime bustle in the 99 cent store parking lot. Captured April 12, 2011 at 5270 W. Sunset Blvd.

This image is a composite of two separate images.  You may also notice some of the image cuts off at the bottom.  This was to preserve elements of the image that I feel are essential while keeping distractions from an oddly-shaped image to a minimum.

The essential spirit of my photography grows out of a love of my subject. Most of the subject matter you'll see here deals with the city of Los Angeles. I grew up in Chicago, and L.A. is a pretty different place. My work leans very much to the architectural realm, although many of my images also include everyday objects and moments of happenstance. All are beautiful in their own way. Read more about me and my photography.
